VIRTUAL Renison Lecture Series: The Getaway Families

Event Type: Adult Learning (Other)
Age Group(s): Adult
Date: 22/09/2020
Start Time: 7:00 PM
End Time: 8:30 PM
Description:
International students bring social, cultural, and economic benefits to Canadian campuses and communities, and research has identified the need for structured programs that increase connections between students and their local communities. These programs can provide students with improved social capital, cultural literacy, and language practice, while local families can gain improved cultural literacy, exposure to new languages, and global connections. This workshop introduces the Getaway Families program, a non-residential host family program that provides structure for international students to connect with local families. The presentation will feature stories from students, families, and coordinators in the program as well as research that supports the value of these structured connections. Registration opens August 25. Registration is done through Eventbrite. Registrants will receive an e-mail with an invitation to join the program 24 hours before the programs starts.
