About the Program
Celebrate Black History Month with an art program inspired by creativity, resilience, and community. We’ll begin by reading Stitchin' and Pullin': A Gee's Bend Quilt, then learn about the remarkable story of the Gee's Bend quilters from over five generations of women, passed on from mother to daughter, grandmother to granddaughter, aunt to niece.
Since the 1880s, in the small town in Alabama known as Gee’s Bend or Boykin, in the south of the United States, women from the Gee’s Bend community have practiced and passed down the art of quilting. The Gee's Bend collective has featured work from over 120 quilters and represents an important contribution to African-American art.
After the story, participants will create their own quilts made of paper, inspired by the patterns, motifs, and symbols of Gee's Bend quilts. This program is open to people of all ages and abilities, and everyone is encouraged to explore their own style and ideas in a supportive, welcoming space.
Everyone welcome. Please register each person attending separately.
