Join Dr. Ginette Lafrenière and her team from the Social Innovation Research Group (SIRG) from the Lyle S. Hallman Faculty of Social Work at Wilfrid Laurier University for a creative presentation on the findings of the experiences of menopause for women and female identified individuals.
Over 85 research participants from various social locations (i.e., newcomers, members of the LGBTQ2+ community, women living below the poverty line) have shared their personal narratives of menopause through an arts-based process entitled: “photo elicitation”. This artistic exhibit will precede the public lecture on the research findings of the project.
Entitled: “Is it Hot in Here?”, the researchers will illustrate how women and female identified individuals have disrupted and reclaimed menopausal narratives by challenging bio-medical discourses which often characterize the issue of menopause.
About the Speaker
Dr. Ginette Lafrenière is a professor and researcher at the Lyle S. Hallman Faculty of Social Work, Wilfrid Laurier University. She is the founding Director of the Social Innovation Research Group (SIRG) which is a multidisciplinary collective of students, staff, faculty, and community partners dedicated to university-community collaboration and community-based research. Originally from Sudbury, Ontario, Dr. Lafreniere has made Kitchener-Waterloo her home since 2002. She is committed to research which is empowering and transformative through arts-based practices.
